It is
thought probable that the Poker played today is made up from
elements of several other different card games. In 1834 it was
described as a ‘cheating game’ played with twenty cards. Where
the name ‘Poker’ came from is unclear. There are several
theories. Historians say it comes from the 18th century French
game ‘Poque’. There are connections to a German game called
Pochspiel, and it is also thought to have come from the Hindu
work Pukka.
Poker is possibly the most popular
card game today. It is played and enjoyed by millions of people
in regular land based and online casinos all over the world. It
is a very popular game and more and more people are regularly
taking it up as an interest. Game play varies so we suggest you
check rules at each venue before playing. Most of our
recommended Casinos have Poker tables available. Please note
that only reputable online casinos are promoted in our Internet
Casino Guide.
New players are frequently given special first
deposit deals and bonuses at most online casino sites. Some will
allow them to watch a few hands or play for free while they
familiarise themselves with the game and its rules. If you are
new to Poker try out some of the free play sites, or those that

It is easy for regular players to enjoy tournaments (including
multi-tournaments) as they are readily available on many top
online casino websites, with higher prizes available for those
playing until the end. Again, we recommend you check out rules
for tournaments as these can differ from the ‘normal’ game.
Poker is very popular, and as such is available 24/7.
What is the objective?
To have the best hand of cards in line with the rules of play.
It is played with fully or partially hidden cards. Players put
bets into a central pot, which becomes the prize for the last
player(s) with the best hand.
What are the rules?
Rules and variations of play differ at each venue so you much
check before playing. Browse through our top online casino
review pages for reputable online casinos. The following games
should give you an insight into some of the games played:
What is Draw Poker?
Two players make a small bet or blind wager before having 5
cards dealt face down. They look at the cards and opt in or out
of the game. Staying in the game means the player must place a
bet. When all bets are complete it completes the first round of
betting. The players swap any number of cards with the dealer
(known as ‘the draw’). When this is complete a second draw
follows.
Once all bets are called there is a showdown. The winner has the
highest-ranking hand. If there is only one player left there is
no showdown and this player wins the pot. They do not have to
show their hand.
What is Seven Card Stud?
Players are dealt two cards face down and one face up.
The player with the low card starts betting and other players
Call, Raise or Fold.
The player with the best hand opens betting on all rounds.
Players are then dealt three cards face up followed by a betting
round after each card.
The last card dealt to each player left in the game is placed
face down on the last betting round.
Remaining players show their hands, the winner takes the pot.
Suits are not included when determining the winner.
If it is a draw, the pot is split.
